This a portion of a post I made on another Reddit community, so some of the things maybe irrelevant to you, but a lot of it has to do with free speech: I want to start of by saying I am 100% against discriminating against people who identify as Muslims or inciting violence against them, but as a Muslim I want to talk about this term 'Islamophobia' and why it is problematic and at many times oppressive. If we look at this word, there are two parts, Islam (a set of ideas and beliefs) and phobia (an irrational fear). The definition of this term usually includes hatred or dislike of Islam, and for some reason according to many 'Muslims' and 'Liberals' that is equivalent to racism and bigotry, which it isn't. If you call someone a bigot because they said they hate Islam, then you are the actual bigot. The problem that arises, which leads to the oppression of the one that is called this term, is what is the actual definition of Islam. More than a billion people identify as Muslims, but they have extremely different versions of Islam (on a principle scale), some are good Islams, but others are ones that are worth hating (narration focused Islam) and is not an irrational fear. I have noticed many times when someone says insulting or negative things about Islam, or I should probably say a version of it, many 'Muslims' are quick to call that individual an 'Islamophobe' and doing so they are actually shutting that person up and bullying them. If you put yourself in that person's shoes, they may have been oppressed or even tortured by a version of Islam, then when they are 'blaspheming' against that version, and people shut them up or call them names, it adds on to their oppression, puts them off, and you are essentially defending that oppressive Islam (not the true Islam). Also, the people who coined this term pretty much used it to defend their messed up version of Islam, which is exactly how many people today are using it. On 'What are your thoughts on ex-Muslims? ' I talk more in depth about this and you should read that as it will help when discussing about this. Imagine making comments about a topic, and someone just starts calling you names and treating you like an enemy, you would be really put off, and you would think those people are pretty stupid. And it is mind blowingly stupid if someone says something harsh about ideas and you start calling them names. That term is like saying Secularismophobia or Democracyophobia. I think this term 'Islamophobia' is not a real word and is actually blatantly against true Islam as it shuts people up, calls others names when they are talking about ideas, defends oppressive versions of Islam, stops critical thinking, and most importantly silences those against certain Islams that have traumatized them. Also, those 'Muslims' who use this term, especially like those mentioned above are actually building more hatred towards people who identify as Muslims. This term is like a mini blasphemy law. This is a response to one of the comments someone made: I don't think you read my post properly, Besides Islam, I put in brackets: a set of ideas and beliefs. If someone says they hate Islam, or in other words they hate a set of ideas and beliefs, it for sure is not racist or anti-Muslim. Semite is a people and Islam is a set of ideas, there is a huge difference, so they are in no way equivalents. A bigot is someone who is intolerant of those holding different opinions, so if someone has an opinion no matter how harsh it is on a set of ideas (Islam) and you start calling that person names like racist, bigot, or 'Islamophobe', then you are the bigot, since you are the one who is intolerant of other opinions. What is worse is many people do this because their religion or interpretation of Islam tells them to do this, which worsens the image of Islam and actually leads to more hatred and distrust to people who identify as Muslims. I am differentiating between people and ideas. When you say you believe in Islam it is your interpretation of Islam that many others who identify as Muslims may not believe in. Similarly, if someone says they hate Islam, is it an interpretation that not all self-identified Muslims have, so it is not discriminatory, it is called free speech. Islam is a very encompassing word. If someone says they hate Islam, but its a messed up interpretation, I consider that person to be more closer to true Islam than someone who says they love it, but they love an oppressive interpretation of it. Again, Semite is a people and Islam is a set of ideas like secularism or democracy. When I say it's not a real word, I meant to say it is a word that doesn't make sense because many people think Islam is oppressive and abusive, so they don't actually have an irrational fear of Islam. They have a rational fear of Islam (not a correct interpretation, but it is one that many have faith in). Blasphemy laws punish and shut up those who says things about Islam that maybe insulting, similarly if someone says they hate Islam (even if in their head it is an interpretation of Islam that is worth hating), and others call that individual names and doing so they are shutting him up. I don't agree with Maajid Nawaz on everything (just like every human on this planet), but he said a lot of truth in the videos. Towards the end, the man explains who made this term and how they were the biggest hypocrites. This is 'What are your thoughts on ex-Muslims? ' mentioned in the first post, which you don't need to read, but may help: I really respect them because most of them reject the same version of Islam that me and many people in this Quranism Reddit group do. People who genuinely consider themselves to be Ex-Muslims (identified as a Muslim in the past, but doesn't anymore) a lot of times have the same principles as me because we both reject the same version of Islam, and many people who genuinely consider themselves Muslims have strongly opposing principles to my ones because they may have faith in an Islam that me and probably most reasonable and decent people hate and fear. It is like two people of opposing religious identities have the same faith (in principles) and two people of the same religious identity have faiths (in principles) that can't be more opposing. I do feel incredibly sad for them because many go through incredible amounts of oppression and partiality, for example there are many countries where if you publicly announce that your are an Ex-Muslim it is a death penalty. Also, when they were oppressed and even tortured by versions of Islam and they understandably said things like "Fuck Islam" or "Fuck Muhammad", or were criticizing and 'blaspheming' against Islam or a version of it I should say, they were silenced, personally attacked, talked to in a harsh manner (condescending), were called names like racist, bigot, or 'Islamaphobe' (I think that word is probably one of the stupidest words in the dictionary), which added on to their oppression and things like this really builds up pressure in a person. I think when someone is speaking it is important to fully turn towards all the information presented, context (situation they may have experienced), and look at what definition they are using for certain terms especially Islam in this situation. I have seen many instances where an 'Ex-Muslim' says they are against Islam, but it is a messed up version, and many 'Muslims' are more harsh to that person than someone who says they love Islam, but an unjust version. It should be the other way around, I have more respect and would take sides for the 'Ex-Muslim' who hates that Islam, than a 'Muslim' who is harsh towards that person or supports that Islam. In that situation the 'Ex-Muslim' is closer to true Islam (submission to God's principles as a way of life) than the 'Muslim'. That's my thoughts about them, I don't consider myself any superior to those who come out as Ex-Muslims, I'm pretty most of them are much better people than me, and I even joined their Ex-Muslim Reddit group (It's not that bad, they say very similar things we say in this group, and they are pretty funny in a good way).
