Unlike the gills of fish, human lungs are adapted to the exchange of gases at atmospheric pressure. For solid and liquid tissues like bone, muscle and blood, the high ambient pressure is not much of a problem; but it is a problem for any gas-filled spaces like the mouth, ears, paranasal sinuses and lungs. The danger of pressure damage is greatest in shallow water because the ratio of pressure change is greatest near the surface of the water. The raised pressure also affects the solution of breathing gases in the tissues over time, and can lead to a range of adverse effects, such as inert gas narcosis, and oxygen toxicity. Decompression must be controlled to avoid bubble formation in the tissues and the consequent symptoms of decompression sickness. With a few exceptions, the underwater environment tends to cool the unprotected human body. This heat loss will generally lead to hypothermia eventually. Hazards of the underwater environment [ edit] There are several classes of hazards to humans inherent to the underwater environment. Absence of breathable gas, which can cause asphyxia, specifically by drowning. Ambient pressures which could cause barotrauma, or toxic effects of breathing gas components at raised partial pressures. Ambient temperatures which may lead to hypothermia, or in unusual cases, to hyperthermia, due to high rates of heat exchange. Solution of inert breathing gas components may lead to decompression sickness if decompression is too rapid. Entrainment of diver by moving water in currents and waves can cause injury by impacting the diver against hard objects or moving them to inappropriate depths. The ambient pressure diver may dive on breath-hold, or use breathing apparatus for scuba diving or surface-supplied diving, and the saturation diving technique reduces the risk of decompression sickness (DCS) after long-duration deep dives. Immersion in water and exposure to cold water and high pressure have physiological effects on the diver which limit the depths and duration possible in ambient pressure diving. D iving into the January release schedule, unofficial dumping ground of studios, can give one a sinking feeling here in the US. After being spoiled by the extravagant riches of awards season, a brief, packed period overflowing with high-quality films crafted with care and precision, we’re then given malformed byproducts, perhaps promising on paper but quite often punishing on screen. Previous years have offered the Matthew McConaughey stinker Serenity, the masochistically unfunny spoof Fifty Shades of Black and, just last week, an entirely unnecessary redo of The Grudge. Filmed three years ago and finally being unleashed on audiences with minimal fanfare, the Alien-aping sci-fi thriller Underwater is the most frustrating kind of January movie: one that’s almost, kind of, nearly, worth seeing. It’s a good movie that got soggy, turning it into an average one instead, a script with blurred pages, ink seeping into one big murky splurge. The setup is simple, and loosely familiar to genre fans. A crew of aquatic researchers are left in disarray when an earthquake destroys most of their facility. They’re unsure what caused it but there are concerns that the drilling team they work alongside has found something that should have been left buried. You know the deal. For a while, Underwater’s brisk goofiness is, if anything, a refreshing palate cleanser after the more serious-minded offerings of late. There’s an impressively ominous scene-setter as we glide all the way down, accompanied by an unsettlingly sinister score, and once we’re we’re onboard, we’re thrown straight into the action as our heroine, played by Kristen Stewart, fights to survive a tense sequence of destruction. It continues to move along at a fair lick and while for the most part, it recalls better, smarter examples of the genre, the bare minimum is done well enough. But as the last act comes into view, so does a creeping realisation that, er, that’s all there is because when the formula does allow space for innovation, the script from Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad sticks a bit too closely to well-recycled beats, originated in Alien and never far from our screens since. When the crew members inevitably start getting picked off, their death scenes, because of the film’s mass-audience-pleasing PG-13 rating, are largely incoherent. At one point a character has to remind someone, and us, that a death actually did just occur. It’s of course entirely possible to construct a film such as this with a lower rating in mind, but the script’s insistence on including theoretically gory moments suggests that a neutering has taken place and sloppy studio tampering has left the movie hopelessly defanged. The three years that it has taken for the film to reach us has aged it in a number of ways but most notably in the decision to cast TJ Miller as comedy support, a tiresome jester who has since been mercifully pushed aside by the industry. Photograph: Alan Markfield It has not been a great time for Stewart of late, an actor who had managed, quite brilliantly, to escape the shadow of the Twilight franchise to become an intriguingly unknowable arthouse darling. But her excursions back into the mainstream continue to be ill-advised, and while she tried her best to bring life to Elizabeth Banks’s shoddy Charlie’s Angels script, the film proved to be one of 2019’s biggest flops. She’s decent enough here in a role that mostly requires her to recite technical jargon and fix things while in her underwear, a directorial decision employed so often that it starts to border on creepy. Her character also conforms to the sci-fi rule that dictates that a female lead must also be grieving, but while it added pathos to both Gravity and Arrival, it feels tacked-on here, and a late stage attempt to add emotional resonance sinks fast. What frustrates me most about Underwater is just how very little it brings to the table. It’s a solid, competently directed regurgitation of an oft-told tale that never manages to justify its own existence. With a budget of around $80m, that’s really not good enough. As I entered the screening I was handed a scrap of paper that implored me not to reveal any of the film’s “surprises and plot twists” and as I left, I was scratching my head trying to figure out what on earth those were supposed to be. The only surprise here is why film-makers are still trying to remake Alien rather than trying to make something new. Underwater is out in the US on 10 January and in the UK on 31 January.

Those fearful of drowning, tight spaces or derivate horror movies will probably want to steer clear of Underwater, a shallow but effective blast of monster mayhem. Kristen Stewart ably plays a steely engineer fighting to stay alive on a deep-sea rig imperilled by nasty aquatic creatures, while director William Eubank freely pillages from the first two Alien films, The Abyss and Gravity for taut scares. Underwater is hampered by some of the genre’s silliest conventions — questionable character motivations, delusions of grandeur — but the movie nonetheless succeeds by capitalising on an elemental terror: underwater, it’s very hard to see the dangers right in front of you. A funhouse of primal fears and obvious cinematic referencing Opening January 10 in the US and February 7 in the UK, the movie will hope to harness Stewart’s commercial clout, although last year’s disappointing Charlie’s Angels (currently $59 million worldwide) suggests that the actress can only pull so much by herself. Vincent Cassel, playing the ship’s grizzled captain, has his own following, but word of mouth will be key, for better or worse. Norah (Stewart) works as part of a drilling operation taking place seven miles below the ocean’s surface. After a freak accident cripples the rig, leaving only a handful of survivors, she and her remaining crewmembers realise that the cause of the disturbance was some sort of ferocious beast that isn’t happy to have these humans in its watery home. Eubank ( The Signal) does nothing to hide Underwater ’s influences, offering a funhouse of primal fears and obvious cinematic referencing. The film isn’t even remotely original, but Eubank, cinematographer Bojan Bazelli and his three editors create a consistently nerve-racking experience, starting off with a gripping sequence in which Norah must act quickly to keep herself alive during the rig explosion. From there, Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad’s pithy script maps out a familiar scenario — Norah and the other survivors undergo a harrowing odyssey to reach an abandoned outpost where they might be able to radio for help — and then unleashes all types of horrors, killing off one ensemble player after another. Underwater does a solid job emphasising the constant terror surrounding Norah. Not only are these crew-members stuck deep under the ocean, their oxygen running short, but they must journey through murky waters to their destination, rarely able to see far in front of them. This allows Eubank to repeatedly shock Norah and the audience with what’s just out of view, which makes the jump scares a little more organic than in most second-tier horror movies. In fact, not until the end do we get a decent idea of what these carnivorous critters look like beyond their rows of jagged teeth and icky tentacles. To be sure, the characters are cardboard, and the supporting cast rarely rises above dull competency. (The low-water mark is TJ Miller, insufferable as the strained comic relief, reliably doling out lame wisecracks in every situation. ) But Jessica Henwick is a worthy sidekick to Stewart, playing a grad student who finds untapped heroism during this ordeal.. And Cassel does project a certain amount of weary gravitas, his character hiding melancholy secrets that will be revealed in predictable fashion When Underwater aspires to be anything more than B-movie escapism, it largely misfires. An attempt to flesh out Norah’s backstory adds little, and the story’s occasional nods to environmental woes — look what happens when humanity messes with Mother Nature — come across as half-hearted. And yet, Stewart’s committed performance somewhat sells the film’s pretensions. Norah is such a no-nonsense figure that she grounds this well-worn material. (And unlike some of Norah’s colleagues, she never does anything stupid, which leads to their inevitable, grisly deaths. ) Eubank adeptly dramatises the sweaty claustrophobia inside the rig — that sense that these characters are trapped under an unfathomable amount of water — and composers Marco Beltrami and Brandon Roberts create a mood of giddy sci-fi horror. And although there are plenty of loud scares in Underwater, Eubank also makes room for some judicious silence, letting the slow crack of the glass in a crewmember’s helmet send shivers of anguish through a viewer. This film owes a massive debt to better movies that came before, but Stewart and company tread water proficiently enough. They are able to make it to the meet-point station by taking an access tunnel, allowing them to charge and clean their suits, but find that Smith's oxygen source is badly damaged from the debris. As they make their way through the access tunnel, Paul is attacked by an unknown creature and is dragged underwater before being ripped out of his suit and killed. Before leaving the access tunnel, the team discover that Smith's damaged oxygen pod will cause him to have to breathe in toxic fumes from the explosion. Unwilling to leave another crew member behind, Price, Lucien and Haversham agree to help him walk, dragging him if they have to. The remaining four crew members press on and start their walk across the ocean floor, but a humanoid creature appears, dragging Smith into a cave. Lucien manages to pull Smith out, but then tries to go for Smith's bolt gun, allowing the creature an opportunity to drag Lucien up through the water and away from the other three. Price is dragged along with Lucien, but when the creature begins ascending, Lucien sacrifices himself so that Price may escape the increasing change in pressure. Price ends up at the abandoned Shepard Station and finds that Lucien worked there beforehand, causing suspicion as to what Lucien really knew about these creatures and their involvement with the drilling stations. It is also revealed that Lucien's daughter, whom he frequently discusses as a presence in his life, died years ago. Price tries to make contact with Smith and Haversham, but to no avail. She then gets a new pressurized suit and leaves the Shepard, continuing toward the Roebuck. Walking along the ocean floor, Price reunites with Haversham, dragging Smith towards the Roebuck Station, and proceeds to help. As they enter the station, they notice that there is a nest of the humanoid creatures hanging from the ceiling and try to sneak by, but Haversham’s suit, low on oxygen, begins to make noise, causing one of them to wake up and attack Price. Price is partially swallowed by one of the creatures, but is able to kill it and break free. Before more of the creatures can attack, an enormous creature reveals itself and causes an explosion. Haversham rescues Price and they continue their way into the Roebuck. The three are able to reach the escape pod bay, but Price discovers that only two work, with a third being damaged and unusable. Price and Haversham manage to get an ailing but still alive Smith into one of the pods, and Price eventually convinces Haversham to take the last one. As this is happening, the gigantic alpha creature, which allegedly attacked and destroyed their rig earlier, emerges from around the Roebuck surrounded by even more of the humanoid creatures. The creatures start to follow the two escape pods, while the alpha begins to attack the Roebuck. Price, knowing she is already going to die, raises the energy levels of the core engines so that they explode, killing the creatures and allowing the escape pods to reach the surface. The film ends with images of newspaper articles depicting Tian Industries and their attempts to cover up the incident, which includes keeping Haversham and Smith's testimonies classified. I continue to marvel at the skill in which Ron Howard spinned the tale based on the true incident which happened in April 1970. I adore this movie, even to the point of being corny. Let me just say that everything, from the music to the period detail, was beautifully brought to life. I loved all the guys in Houston with their 1970-looking hairdos, clothing and horn rimmed glasses, I loved the big honking (now antique looking) TV in the Lovell's living room, I loved Kathleen Quinlan's retro clothing and earrings (she's such a lovely woman and actress) and I loved the acuracy of the rocket, the command module, the lunar module (that spidery looking guy) and the little pod with the parachutes. The cast was absolutely perfect. Tom Hanks as Jim Lovell, the commander of the Apollo 13 mission to the moon, was brilliant, and brought all the excitement and then disappointment and fear, to life. Bill Paxton is always a joy to watch, portraying astronaut Fred Haise, whose wife is pregnant. Paxton displays a childlike joy in his excitement about "flying in space" for the very first time. Kevin Bacon was quiet and strong as Jack Swigert, a "bachelor" astronaut, and his feelings of guilt over what happened to the spacecraft were very tangible to me. Gary Sinise was a fabulous support as astronaut Ken Mattingly, who was supposed to be the pilot, but was held back from the mission because of exposure to measles. Ed Harris, ahh, Ed Harris. I love this guy. He turned in a fiery, commanding, yet lovely performance as the head of the flight operations in Houston. The stress that Gene Kranz must have been under looked exhausting coming from Harris. While the crew of Apollo 13 awaits a plan for re-entering Earth's atmosphere safely, they encounter problem after problem, loss of power, loss of breathing oxygen, increase in toxic CO2 gas, freezing cold because of the lack of electicity, a kidney infection in Haise, inappropriate weight, velocity and angle for re-entry, and if all that weren't enough, their parachutes might not open and the heat sheild might have been damaged to where the astronauts would be incinerated before they can return to earth. Oh yeah, and a typhoon in the south Pacific too. This movie is over two hours long, but it is so absorbing, so interesting, and so riveting, that not one milisecond is boring. The supporting cast also features Xander Berkely, Clint Howard, Loren Dean and many other familiar faces whose names escape me, as the hard working, wonderful staff of experts in Houston who were DETERMINED to bring the three men of Apollo 13 home alive. This movie was perfect. I can't say a bad thing about it. It deserved Film Of The Year for 1995 (I don't even remember which film got the award, so it must not have been all that memorable) and I think it is Ron Howard's finest film to date.

Yes, I have seen “Cats. ” Bethany: Your review, though, was all beauty and light and hilarity! You suffer so that the rest of us may never, ever have to see cats wearing pants. I, seemingly alone in the world, actually detested the stage show, so I wasn’t in any danger … Moira: You are wise. I’m still trying to figure out that pants thing. I felt like I had earned time lying around on the couch watching CatVideoFest 2020 and saying, “This is for WORK. ” Bethany: I love that our jobs involve watching, say, a cat being dressed up as a taco (perfectly acceptable! A taco costume is not pants). But is it wrong that I had trepidation about 70 minutes of internet-sourced cat videos? I’m no mathematician, but cat videos don’t last long, and at the rate of one video per minute, that’s 70 entire cats. And some videos feature more than one! Nor am I an internet-cat-video rabbit-hole-goer-downer — I tend to like my cat videos like I like my cats: one at a time. Unless it’s a basket of kittens! Prior to viewing CatVideoFest, I got my heart set on a basket of kittens. Surely in an hour-plus, multiple kitten baskets would occur. Moira: Excuse me, do you KNOW how long “Cats” was? About 10, 000 hours. Bring on the cat videos! (And the basket of kittens. Please. ) THE BEST OF CATVIDEOFEST 2020 Cat or throw pillow? A relaxed feline poses in a CatVideoFest 2020 video. Moira: CatVideoFest 2020 contains no footage of my cat, Miranda, nor Bethany’s cat, TK, so it does not include the world’s greatest cats. But I did fall, badly, for a gray puffball kitten named Potato who kicks his hind legs like a rabbit, and who has met Nick Jonas. Bethany: Potato! Paroxysms of cuteness! And also one of the longer segments in the fest, which come as a vast relief during an hour-plus of cat-vid action. And Potato’s story possesses a rags-to-riches plotline, even! Moira: Potato is a local kitty adopted through Seattle Humane, whose staffer Bekah Sandy appears in the film. Seattle Humane is also where I got my cat! Please go there and adopt all the cats (and dogs). Bethany: TK was a foundling, too: just a tiny little orange stripy thing abandoned by an apparently heartless monster out in the wintertime countryside. In the snow. People are the worst. Cats are the best! Moira: I’m so glad she found you! Another longer and very sweet video in CatVideoFest was the story of Winston, a Brooklyn cat found on the sidewalk looking very sad and ill indeed. It was a joy to see him, once taken in and properly treated, looking clean and silky and happy. Bethany: WINSTON. Winston deserves an Oscar. The incredibly nice person who rescued him, and whose video functions as a how-to for saving other down-on-their-luck kitties, deserves a Nobel Prize. I loved the human’s description of giving Winston a bath: “Let’s just say neither of us enjoyed it very much. ” If this video doesn’t make you cry, well, that’s weird. Moira: I definitely teared up. The man’s name is Will Zweigart, and he is the founder of Flatbush Cats, a wonderful cat-rescue organization in Brooklyn. Bethany: Zweigart said people around the neighborhood had seen Winston living on the street for weeks. No one tried to help until he did. Our hero! Now Winston lives a sleek, silky, handsome life with a lucky human. Adopt, don’t shop! Moira: If you go to CatVideoFest, a portion of your ticket price will go to organizations that help cats, including PAWS. Other stars of the fest: the tiny black kitten who squeaked like a mouse, the cat who was a very good sport about shopping for Halloween costumes (ultimately emerging as a very dignified taco, sans pants), and Boris the Yoga Cat, who has a very good time jumping on his human friend when she does yoga. Bethany: No spoilers here — and if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already witnessed it on the internet — but the super-nerdy, deadpan engineers explaining the physics of felines are tremendously funny and so clearly full of love for their kitties. Science with heart! Moira: I actually had not seen that one before! Loved it, especially the term “aspect ratio drift. ” Bethany: Did you catch the video with the cat shredding a newspaper, which happened to be The Seattle Times? Cat subscribers are real! They just can’t read. Moira: My previous cat, Myrna Loy (now making kitty heaven a more glamorous place), used to love The Seattle Times — she would come bursting through it when I was sitting reading the paper. Bethany: Cats! They’re funny!!! LESS IMPRESSIVE CAT-EGORIES Bethany: (Sorry about that — we’re trying very hard not to go overboard on the cat puns. But a few are FINE! ) Moira: CatVideoFest, though delightful, gets a bit repetitive. (Why does everyone in those home videos seem to have the same couch? ) Even I have my limits as to how many times I can watch a cat looking annoyed, or falling off something, or cutely emerging from a grocery bag. And while the video of Henri the Aloof French Cat Having an Existential Crisis is very  funny, I feel like if you like cat videos, you’ve probably already seen it? Bethany: Even I had. It’s still so good, though! All cats secretly speak French, I’m sure. But I’m very much with you on the surfeit of very brief, often blurry home videos here. Even as someone cursed with a long attention span, I required a break partway through. An intermission would be a good idea for the (PLEASE FORGIVE ME) the-CAT-rical release. People at the Uptown could have a glass of wine and some popcorn (a pairing we grew fond of during our less successful Dinner at a Movie outings) and show each other photos of their cats! Moira: Agreed! Another complaint: Some of those blurry, short videos ended too abruptly. Why did we not find out what happened AFTER the kitty at the end knocked the TV over? Inquiring minds. Bethany: And the internet is actually, literally made of these videos. Seek and ye shall instantaneously find a million of them! A PAWS (SORRY! ) TO DISCUSS OUR OWN BEAUTIFUL AND PERFECT CATS Bethany: You won’t be able to take your cat to the Uptown to see CatVideoFest, but if TK is any indicator, that’s completely fine. She snoozed impassively in loaf formation throughout the majority of my home screening, then departed the room for a while, only returning when the soundtrack included some loud meowings, which caused her to verrrrry  cautiously look around the room, her eyes gigantic. I felt kind of terrible. “TK! ” I said. “It’s OK! ” She didn’t listen. With CatVideoFest coming to Seattle later this month, our writers watched and reviewed with their own cats on hand. Getting sparkle vibes here omggggg. This movie is still great. Smooth animation with great art direction, relatable characters, and even some fun parts too. The plot still runs smoothly, and has a nice flow to it. But when it comes to comparing to Kimi No Na Wa, director Shinkai's last movie. This movie doesn't quite add up to the qualities that Kimi has. The plot is less complex compared to Kimi, because it only happens in one timeline. The emotional impact is also felt less. The story still has a hidden message about extreme weather, but I still can't spoil too much, so here's the conclusion:
Just don't expect you are watching another Kimi No Na Wa movie. So think as it were a teenage love story. Still a great tho.

From Makoto Shinkai, director of the smashing hit Your Name comes a story following a young runaway who flees to Tokyo to start a new life. He befriends a girl with a tokubetsu gift of Weather manipulation and the story progresses from there.
First of all the soundtrack was top notch. Radwimps who also composed and wrote music for Your Name were pretty much just as good. The way the music was used makes the scenes more engaging.
The animation was also what should be expected from a Makoto Shinkai film. It was beautiful. Ohhh my, that's intro scene was kirei.
The plot however felt a little bit messy. The first two acts were very satisfying, and the chemistry between the characters were what made the story really interesting. Hina and Hodaka were really cool together. All the other characters were really interesting and engaging characters. The direction of the third act really felt all over the place. It's hard to explain. Your name's ending was a bit similar, but was felt more complete. The film also had no major twists. There was lots of tension though.
The voice acting was really good. The actors are all unknowns but really sounded good as their characters.
This film was original. With many bad Disney CGI remakes out there, I'd rather watch this a hundred times more. It brings us a new story with engaging characters.

This movie is easily one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. I don't like giving spoilers so I'll just put out some points so you can decide whether or not to rent/buy this:
If you like Billy Crystal as a comedian, then you will love this movie. He makes his signature subtle, pessimistic jokes throughout the movie.
Meg Ryan is also great. Although her character develops from a snobby, sheltered young woman to a mature, open-minded woman, she maintains this innocence that makes this fun to watch because you get to kind of feel what she feels. she speaks what comes to mind, and you see her emotions all over her face. It kind of reminds me of her role in Sleepless in Seattle and her other earlier roles.
Together, Billy and Meg have this great chemistry on screen, and this makes the movie feel like you're watching a real story. The way the relationship develops is probably the most interesting thing, so even if you know what happens, you will enjoy watching it happen. If you don't know what happens, it's a perfect feel-good movie with a happy ending, but it's not easy to predict how it gets to the happy ending.
Overall, this movie is a great choice if you're looking for something uplifting, romantic, and funny but also realistic and not too mushy.

It was a groundbreaking film with an incredible cast. Not just Meg and Billy, but I loved Bruno and Carrie as the best friends, too. This is a classic and will always have a spot on my short list of favorite films. Go get the DVD. You'll love it, too.
